GreenByte is designed to maximise user control and transparency. Below we explain what we collect, what stays on device, and what you can opt into sharing.
What we collect
Minimal telemetry: timestamps of sessions, anonymized request counts, and high-level content types (video vs audio). We do not collect raw page HTML, typed content, passwords, or detailed browsing history.
Local-first processing
All CO₂ calculations are performed locally on your device by default. Detailed browsing behavior never leaves your machine. Sharing for leaderboards or research is opt-in only.
Leaderboards & GreenTokens
Leaderboard uploads only contain anonymized aggregates (grams avoided per week, badge count). GreenToken redemptions use minimal identifiers. You can revoke sharing anytime.
Data retention & deletion
Local logs are kept for 30 days and purged automatically. Server-side aggregates are retained up to 2 years for leaderboard integrity. Contact us for immediate deletion or data export.
Security practices
HTTPS for all network calls, encrypted storage at rest, regular updates and security hardening. We do not sell personal data. Incident response procedures are documented and available on request.
School programs & teams
For school programs, clubs, or competitions, GreenByte can provide grouped dashboards, class challenges, and exportable summary reports. Individual browsing details stay private.
