GreenByte estimates CO₂ from network activity, streaming, storage and AI calls using public emission factors and local heuristics. Calculations run on your device unless you enable sharing.

No. All browsing data and CO₂ stats are stored locally on your device. If you sign in with Google, only your email and aggregated statistics are synced to our server via Supabase.

Estimates use best-available emission factors from published research (IEA, Shift Project, peer-reviewed papers). They are designed for awareness and behavioural change, not formal carbon accounting.

GreenByte is a browser extension available for Chrome and Edge. A Windows desktop app is already in development and will offer deeper system-level tracking with even more accurate CO₂ estimates.

No. GreenByte only reads domain names and request sizes to categorize activity (video, audio, social media, etc.). We never collect page text, form inputs, passwords, or full URLs.

We are working on leaderboards to compare your impact with friends and the community, GreenTokens that reward CO₂ reductions and can be donated to eco-charities and environmental organizations, achievements for milestones, and a full Windows desktop app with deeper tracking. Stay tuned!

No. GreenByte works fully offline without any account. Signing in with Google is optional and lets you sync CO₂ statistics across devices and browsers. An account is needed for GreenTokens, achievements, and leaderboards.

Yes. Local data is cleared by removing the extension. If you have an account, you can delete it along with all server-side data from the extension settings, or contact us for assistance.

GreenByte automatically categorizes your browsing into video streaming, music, social media, AI services, gaming, cloud storage, and general browsing. Each category has its own emission factor based on published research.
